A portable split AC's outdoor unit — the component containing the compressor and condenser that must sit outside the habitation space — weighs 12–16 kg and must remain level, vibration-damped, and weather-exposed for months at a time. In a brick house, the bracket choice is straightforward: a standard 300 mm standoff wall bracket, two 10 mm masonry anchors, done. In a caravan, where the exterior wall is a 30–50 mm composite sandwich panel over an aluminium chassis, the bracket selection and fixing method require considerably more care.

What bracket types are available for a split AC outdoor unit on a caravan?

Three main bracket categories cover caravan applications: chassis-bolted wall brackets that fix through the exterior cladding to the aluminium frame, free-standing ground frames that require no fixing to the caravan body, and window-frame clamp brackets that grip the window aperture using tension rather than bolts. Each has a different weight ceiling, stability profile, and reversibility — the most important considerations for a touring vehicle whose exterior must return to its original condition at sale.

Chassis-bolted wall brackets deliver the highest load security, rated to 25–35 kg at 300 mm standoff for brackets sized appropriately for the task. Free-standing frames offer zero permanent fixings but are limited to flat, stable ground and provide no resistance to lateral forces from wind without additional strapping. What load rating and standoff does a caravan split AC bracket need?

The load rating must exceed the outdoor unit's assembled weight by a safety factor of at least 1.5 — so a 14 kg outdoor unit requires a bracket rated to at least 21 kg at the intended standoff distance. Standoff (the horizontal distance between the wall face and the outer edge of the unit) is typically 200–350 mm on a caravan bracket; the greater the standoff, the higher the bending moment on the fixing points, so always check the bracket's rating at the actual standoff you intend to use, not at its minimum.

Most 9,000 BTU portable split outdoor units weigh 12–16 kg assembled with hoses attached. A 200 mm standoff on a bracket rated to 30 kg is appropriate. At 300 mm standoff, the same bracket may only be rated to 22 kg — still sufficient for a 14 kg unit at 1.5× safety factor, but worth verifying in the bracket's specification sheet. How do you fix a bracket to composite sandwich-panel caravan cladding?

The critical step is bypassing the foam or polystyrene core of the sandwich panel and fastening directly to the aluminium extrusion chassis behind it. A standard approach: drill through the exterior aluminium skin and core to the chassis extrusion behind it; insert an M8 bolt (80–100 mm length to span the cladding depth); fit a 80 x 80 mm backing plate on the interior face to spread the load across the inner skin rather than concentrating it at the bolt hole. Use two fixing points per bracket arm, spaced at least 150 mm apart vertically to resist rotation under load.

Locate the chassis extrusion before drilling by measuring from a known reference — caravan windows and doors are typically framed by the chassis, so measuring 100–150 mm from the window aperture edge usually finds a vertical chassis member. A rare-earth magnet dragged slowly across the exterior surface will deflect noticeably when it passes over a steel chassis member, even through the aluminium skin. The galvanic corrosion edge case: why steel brackets on aluminium cladding fail after a few seasons

Galvanic corrosion (the accelerated oxidation of a less-noble metal when it is in direct electrical contact with a more-noble metal in the presence of moisture) is a serious risk when a galvanised or mild-steel bracket is bolted directly to an aluminium caravan panel. Steel and aluminium are widely separated on the galvanic series; in a wet, salt-laden coastal or winter storage environment, the aluminium cladding around the fixing points corrodes preferentially, loosening the bracket over one to three seasons. The remedy is straightforward: fit EPDM or nylon isolating washers between the bracket foot and the aluminium skin, and use either stainless steel or aluminium-alloy fasteners rather than galvanised steel, to eliminate the galvanic couple at every contact point.

How should the bracket be set up to minimise vibration transfer into the caravan interior?

A running compressor generates low-frequency vibration at 25–50 Hz that travels readily through steel into the caravan chassis and is audible inside as a low hum or resonant buzz. Anti-vibration mounts — rubber-bonded isolators that absorb compressor vibration before it reaches the bracket — reduce transmitted noise by 8–15 dB(A) in typical caravan installations. These are available as M8-threaded inserts rated to 15–20 kg each and add approximately £15–30 to the bracket assembly. Fitting four isolators (one per bracket foot) between the outdoor unit's base and the bracket arms is the most effective single step for improving interior comfort on a static site.

For touring caravans where the unit will be removed during transit, anti-vibration mounts also protect the outdoor unit's chassis from road-induced vibration if the unit is stored inside the caravan in a padded bag — the isolators remain attached to the unit's base between uses and dampen any vibration from adjacent gear in the storage locker.

In UK caravanning and DIY communities, the most frequently cited mistake with split AC bracket installations is fixing only into the foam core of the sandwich panel without reaching the chassis — the foam shears under load and the bracket pulls away, sometimes within a single season. Experienced fitters consistently emphasise the importance of locating and bolting directly to the chassis extrusion.

What clearances and orientation does the outdoor unit need on a caravan bracket?

The outdoor unit's condenser fan draws air through the unit and must have unrestricted airflow on both intake and discharge sides. Manufacturer installation guides for portable split units specify a minimum 200–300 mm clearance behind the unit (against the caravan wall) and 500–800 mm clearance in front of the discharge direction. On a caravan bracket, the 200–300 mm standoff typically provides adequate rear clearance; the discharge direction should point away from the caravan wall rather than along it to avoid recirculating hot exhaust air back through the condenser intake.

  1. Measure from the window aperture edge to locate the nearest vertical chassis member — typically within 100–150 mm of the window frame.
  2. Drill pilot holes through the exterior skin at the fixing positions; confirm chassis contact by inserting a long screwdriver before widening the holes to the bolt diameter.
  3. Fit EPDM isolating washers on the exterior skin at each fixing point before positioning the bracket foot.
